Sally’s Scottie

“All in the Family” was a groundbreaking television show that made people laugh and squirm at the same time. Based on a British sitcom, much of the personality of the pivotal character, Archie Bunker, was based on the father of the show’s creator, Norman Lear. Edith and Archie Bunker’s only child, “Gloria,” was played by Sally Struthers who’d always had purebred dogs, but didn’t get the breed she had always wanted until she was in her 50s.

In an interview, Struthers said, “I’m Scottish myself and I’d always wanted a Scotty, but until recently all the dogs I’d lived with were larger breeds, like Labs and Newfoundlands. I named Bob after my father, who was a general practice doctor. It’s fun walking with him and just saying, ‘Come on, Bob!” Struthers is said now to be an avid collector of Scottish Terrier memorabilia, and that includes pillows, figurines, an apron with Scotty dogs all over it, and a half-dozen stuffed Scotties. “One’s so real looking it’s scary,” she once said.
