Artist’s Thoughts: This piece is a portrait of my own dog, Duke. When I create a piece like this, I begin by taking several reference photographs. This piece is a combination of two reference photographs: my German Shepherd dog and a composition of riverbed rocks. I layer the two photographs together in my painting, disguising Duke in the river rocks. I add just enough features to ensure that he is recognizable. I enjoy playing with the balance of disguising my subject too well or not well enough.
