A Boston Terrier First

Most folks already know that the Boston Terrier is widely recognized as the first dog breed to be developed in America for companionship rather than working ability.

In the year 1889, fanciers formed the American Bull Terrier Club (the former name of Boston Terriers), but Boston Terrier fanciers met opposition to this name from both Bulldog and Bull Terrier fanciers, so the name was changed in 1891. The newly named Boston Terrier Club of America was not only one of the first breed specific clubs affiliated with the AKC, but was also the first club for a breed native to the United States.  By 1900, four Boston Terriers had already claimed championships: Topsy, Spider, Montey, and Tansey.
