A Pharaoh Fairy Tale

Veteran readers know how fond we are of legends and anecdotes associated with our glorious breeds, and the Pharaoh Hound certainly has a couple of good ones. Howard Ogden offers one of our favorite quips:  “The Pharaoh Hound is the only breed of dog that blushes – or needs to: Pharaoh Hounds have filthy minds.”

The next one is more romantic than humorous, but one can see how it might have its roots from long ago in distant lands.

The AKC breed standard allows for the dogs color to range from tan/rich, tan/chestnut with a white tip on the tail strongly desired. White on the chest is also permissible, and this mark called “the Star.” Legend has it that this white “star” on the chest reflected moonlight to aid the dog while hunting.  It must be true. The breed continues to be revered by Maltese farmers and hunters who admire everything about this breed had has adapted it to be a great hunter: Speed, keen vision, a surprisingly hardy nature, and the ability and willingness to to jump over anything in their way.

  1. You have completely captured everything I love about this breed. They are simply amazing dogs to spend time with. While they certainly are NOT for everyone, to those of us that were meant to be their partners, they are something no other breed can compare! We love our red pointy dogs, these children of Anubis.
