Finnish Lapphund males have a more pronounced “mane” than the ladies, which we suspect is nature’s shameless ploy for fellas to get more attention. As if.
Actually, there was a shorter coated Lapphund. When the first breed standard was accepted in 1945 by the Finnish Kennel Club, the original standard included both a shorter coated dog and a longer coated dog, often born, it was said, in the same litters. In 1967, the long coated dogs were given a separate standard and called the Lapinkoira (translated as Finnish Lapphund), while the short coated dogs were called the Lapinporokoira translated as Lapponian Herder. In 1996, the standard was revised in Finland. We’re delighted to report that this wonderful breed is quite popular in Finland, and was the third most popular dog breed in the country in 2005 with over 1,000 puppies registered for that year. Fist pump!
