We’ve read this before, but dismissed is as “breed legend.” When one story keeps coming up during research, however, it’s either time to cry “uncle,” or ask actual owners for their input.
Hunters and assorted dog experts have long written about the other-worldly intelligence, if not psychic prowess, of the Pointer. Edward Jesse, Esq., a noted 14th century dog authority who authored, Dog Anecdotes, wrote, “Thus a Pointer has been known to refuse to hunt for a person who had previously missed every bird the dog had found. He left him with every mark of disgust, nor could any coaxing induce him to continue with his unsportsmanlike companion.”
If true, what a hoot. A dog that won’t be caught seen with a poor shot. Pointer owners who hunt, is this so much “hooey,” or is there some truth to the discriminating acumen of the Pointer?
