The first two Kuvaszok in Canada were brought over in 1959 by Joseph Sulyak de Papp, a Hungarian artist and civil engineer who imported them from Germany. A year later, he got another pair from a zoo in Brno, Czechoslovakia in exchange for two Canada Geese. Even as recently as seven or eight years ago, LGDs (livestock guardian dogs) were still a rarity in Canada, and of them, the Great Pyrenees was the most common breed found both as a companion dog and working guardian dog.
Meanwhile in Australia, the Kuvasz was still quite new in 1998, and the first generation of puppies wasn’t born until late 1999. According to the website, Burke’s Backyard (which, at the time of the writing was undated), there were then only eight Kuvaszok living in Australia.
