Painting Details: As I started this portrait I wanted to capture a special moment in my granddaughter’s visits to our home. She also loves our sheltie and dachshunds and they all share a love for treats. My idea was to capture a special moment of them spending time together. She is getting to the age where she has discovered how wonderful candy and treats are! I portrayed her where she is quietly sneaking pieces of candy. My dogs are looking around as if to say, “She is going to be in big trouble!” My sheltie always gives us this inquisitive look, as if she is trying to understand all that we are saying. The dachshund that I have portrayed in this painting is tiny, only about 15 pounds. However, she thinks she is a huge dog and has no fear with strangers, big dogs, huge trucks, etc. I captured these personalities in my painting. My love of dogs has spread to my children and now my two grandchildren. They all have a love for dogs, and we can’t imagine life without our amazing dogs in our lives.
Artist’s thoughts:
Dogs have given me great joy in my life for as long as I can remember. They gave me companionship, love, faithfulness and loyalty when some of my friends and family would let me down. I was shy as a child and many times my dogs were who I would play with, talk with, and even cry with when I was going through a difficult time. I remember their keen sense of understanding and would know when you were happy or sad. I have fond memories of them snuggling with me and even lick my tears when I was sad. Most of the time they would make me laugh, and I felt the world was a wonderful place when we shared time together.
Once I married and started a family we bought our first Sheltland Sheepdog. I loved their beauty because they reminded me of my beloved TV show, Lassie. They were also adorable because they were half the size of a collie. I felt like I owned a baby Lassie, forever! We soon discovered how intelligent and faithful they were. They always stayed around our home and we would often see them herding our kids when they would run around playing games. They caught on very quickly to our training and we have even taken them to agility training, where they had great success. I also recently purchased a dachshund. I wanted a smaller dog that would be great for snuggling on laps. They have not disappointed me and I have two sweet dachshunds that love to cuddle on my lap and burrow under our blankets. I recently published my first children’s book where I wrote and illustrated a story about two shelties. I am also hoping to write my next story about my dachshund, who is “little but tough!”
