Artist’s Thoughts: Competition rules stated that each of the AKC categories of dog breeds had to be represented in art submissions. The theme is “Form Follows Function”. This had me thinking that the distinctive form, characteristics, and stature of each magnificent breed was, in some way, determined by their original function. What was each breed originally trained or bred to do?
Some breeds derive from particular countries, others are chosen and bred to perform a particular function. Others, as in the case of the centerpiece of my original oil painting submission, are easily recognizable and absolutely adorable.
I paint portraits of many AKC registered breeds and did, in fact win the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Poster Competition in 2005. For this challenge I wanted to choose a breed in each category that I have not previously painted and chose individual dogs that have history and function that lent itself to the composition I had in mind to create. All are magnificent in form! I hope my representation of their origins or original function intrigues and delights.
