Most Dogs Per Capita City? It Might Surprise You

With one dog for every seventeen residents, Tel Aviv can boast being the city with the highest number of dogs per capita in the world. In recognition of this, and for the first time in Israel, a city-wide celebration of a special day for dogs is being held today, August 26, 2016, and we wish our Israeli people and dog friends well. It’s not a new trend, however. The city (thought to have over 25,000 dogs) has 70 public dog parks, a total of 1.3 dog parks for every 1 square kilometer. Tel Aviv also has special two dog-friendly beaches where dogs can romp freely through the water.  The Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality provides 24/7 veterinarian services for homeless animals, runs a no-kill shelter, operates a special animal patrol which checks animal abuse reports, and last month, held a special screening of the movie “The Secret Life of Pets,” for dogs and their owners.  Read more about it here.

  1. Hi! What breed of dog is shown in the photo at the intro to this article? It looks exactly identical to our dog. We have often wondered what breed he is and are pretty sure he is a “Carolina Dog”.

    Thanks!

    • Hi Les, the article actually does mention the breed shown at the intro, it’s a Canaan Dog of Israel. We’re not able to post pictures in this comment section, but if you do a Google search on the Carolina Dog and the Canaan Dog and compare them side by side, you will see differences.
