Eastern New Mexico University opened its doors to students in 1934, and early on, students rallied around the need for a mascot. There are a few stories that float around the halls as to why the Greyhound was chosen, and we’ve not gotten to the bottom of any of them. What we do know is that in the 1950s, “Ralphie,” a Greyhound-garbed human, joined the Greyhound tradition, but in 2009, ENMU adopted two former racing Greyhounds, “Vic” and “Tory.” The pair regularly attend events on campus and in the community and serve as good-will ambassadors for both the school and Greyhound adoption.
