In actuality, the Grosser (or Large) Münsterländer is more closely related to the German pointers than it is to the Small Münsterländer. It was likely the result of efforts in the 19th century to breed purer lines of German gun dogs than had been done up to that point. The German Long-haired Pointer people insisted on a rigid standard with wording for color that left out many pointers not that color. The breeders living in Munster pretty much blew off this strict new code and continued breeding dogs they felt lived up to a standard of performance over appearance. In 1919, they essentially picked up their marbles by creating their own breed club for their black and white dogs that had been shut out by the Long-haired Pointer people, and gave their breed its own name – the Large Münsterländer.
This is a typical HPR dog (hunt, point and retrieve) that does well in field trials and is growing in popularity.
