A Guinness Record Broken!

A Whippet from Calgary has bumped off a Jack Russell Terrier from California in the Guinness World Record for the Fastest time to pop 100 balloons by a dog.

The record set by “Twinkie,” a Jack Russell, seemed like one that would hold for a long time: 39.08 seconds. “Toby,” a nine year Whippet, however, is about to be recognized as the fastest canine balloon popper in the world by using just his teeth and paws. The cream-colored sighthound popped 100 balloons in 36.25 seconds at the Shawnessy YMCA beating the previous Guinness World Record.

Toby’s talent for balloon-popping was discovered by accident when he and his owner were on a walk several years ago and found a balloon caught on a fence. Toby chased it through the field, and his owner, Christie Springs, decided that if that one balloon was that funny, three would be hilarious. “It escalated to the point where we were filling our outdoor swimming pool full of balloons to see how many the dogs could pop and entertain the neighborhood,” Christie said in an interview with CBC News.

It wasn’t until a friend sent a video of the current record holder that Christie realized her dog’s passion could become a competitive sport. Toby’s time of 36.25 seconds still needs to be verified by Guinness World Records, but his owner is pretty sure Toby can do it faster. She reports that his best time in practice is actually 28.28 seconds.
