Sometimes we regret that our breeds don’t still go by the names they had in the early days. “Hairy Mou’ed Collie” is a name with teeth, though truth be told, “Bearded Collie” is pretty cool, too, and that’s it’s current name.
There aren’t any records to suggest how long Beardies were bred with native Scottish stock, but the breed has been used to herd sheep for a long time; images of Bearded Collies appeared in paintings dating back to the 1700s, and an early mention appeared in British Dogs from 1879 by Hugh Dalziel.
