To their owners and admirers, they’re called, “singers,” but the New Guinea Singing Dog was also known at one time as “Canis hallstromi” or “Hallstrom’s Dog” after Sir Edward Hallstrom, one of Australia’s best-known philanthropists and businessmen of the mid 20th century, and the man who brought the first pair out of the Southern Highlands District of Papua New Guinea and to the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia in 1957.
