Today is National Hot Chocolate Day, and yes, there’s a dog in this story, though it’s a tortured route to get there. Play along.
Belgium has had a long association with chocolate since the early 17th century, and it remains an important industry in that country. Among the most famous Belgian chocolates is Godiva Chocolatier. The company was founded by Joseph Draps who opened his first Godiva Chocolatier shop in 1926 on a cobblestone street on Grand Place, Brussels’ central square. Godiva chocolates remain a high- quality, and very guilty plea$ure.
In 2008, Godiva ran a television commercial that included a very famous Belgian resident. See if you can spot him below:
If you missed it, he appears four seconds into the clips. It was Fidèle, a yellow Labrador Retriever who became famous for lounging in his favorite spot on a windowsill facing the Groenerei canal in Bruges. His home, the Côté Canal bed and breakfast, is picturesque enough, but for years, Fidèle was such a fixture in his favorite spot that tour boats often stopped specifically for passengers to take his picture. His owner, Caroline Van Langeraet, reported that tourists often sent her dog fan mail and packages filled with dog toys. The dog became so iconic in Belgium that he even made an appearance in in the 2008 film, In Bruges. Sadly, Fidèle passed away on January 31, 2016 at the age of 12. He had a good life (though never long enough), but you can still get a 25 second glimpse of his life in the clip below (erroneously naming him as a “Golden” Labrador Retriever).
