The art you see here was inspired by a poster created by Ludwig Hohlwein who used a Whippet to advertise a dog show held in Frankfurt, Germany in 1912. Hohlwein started his career as an architect, and he evolved into Germany’s most prolific poster artist for both advertising and military posters for both World Wars. Some say he was one of the greatest poster illustrators, ever. His images of smiling Aryan individuals practically glowing from the light of the sun are instantly recognizable as Hohlwein pieces, a curious juxtaposition to a post that will come tomorrow morning about anti-German sentiment during both world wars. Later, Hohlwein would create ads for Wulco dog food, but it’s posters like the one seen here that stand out. We share it not only to highlight its exquisite lines, but to marvel at how little the breed has changed since then.
