How “Smart” Are You About Breed Standards?

From the Cambridge Dictionary: Smart: Having a clean, tidy, and stylish appearance.

It might surprise some readers to learn that only seven breeds mention “smart” in their breed standards in a way that refers to appearance, not intelligence. Hint: Not one of them is a herding, hound, working, terrier, or non-sporting breed.

From the Barbet’s AKC standard: Topline remains level and carriage is smart;

“Small-sized dog of smart appearance with a clear-cut and compact outline” – Japanese Terrier’s AKC standard;

Lancashire Heeler: “Gait: Smart and brisk;”

English Springer Spaniel: It is legitimate to trim about the head, ears, neck and feet, to remove dead undercoat, and to thin and shorten excess feathering as required to enhance a smart, functional appearance;”

“It is legitimate to trim about the head, throat, ears, tail and feet to give a smart, functional but natural appearance,” from the Boykin Spaniel’s AKC standard;

And from the Brussels Griffon standard, “General Appearance: A toy dog, intelligent, alert, sturdy, with a thickset, short body, a smart carriage and set-up.”

Irish Water Spaniel: “General Appearance: That of a smart, upstanding, strongly built moderate gundog.
