Back in 1994, a company was founded that was among the first premium specialty catalogs and e-commerce websites on the scene. They called themselves, “In the Company of Dogs,” and offered their customers a range of high end merchandise that made them prescient in knowing their market. In 2011, “Oliver,” a Glen of Imaal Terrier, graced the cover of the company catalog. and his very proud owner, Monique Anthony, shared his picture with us.
However….
In 2017, only 48 Glen of Imaal Terriers were registered with The Kennel Club in the breed’s country of origin. This was nearly half of what registrations numbers were the year before. We tip our hat to In the Company of Dogs for giving exposure to a vulnerable breed eight years ago, but sadly, it’s going to take more to give the breed a leg up. It’s baffling, really. Glens are brave and bold as one might expect in a terrier, but the breed is gentler, and less excitable than most terriers. It really is one of dogdom’s best kept secrets.
