The Indian Spitz – Movie Dog

The only thing more dated than an old American movie is an old foreign one. Still, if it’s Indian cinema, and it includes a dog, chances are good we’ll be good with it. What makes the romantic comedy made in 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, interesting is that the vital role of “Tuffy” was played by a dog described as an Indian Spitz. The India Spitz isn’t recognized by any major kennel club, but it was identified as a separate Indian breed by the Kennel Club of India. It was said to be among the most popular dogs in India in the 1980s and the 1990s when import rules in India made it very difficult to import other dog breeds.

The “real” “Tuffy” was played by “Redo,” the 6-year-old Indian Spitz that belonged to the Assistant Director, Madhukar Sawle. Actress Madhuri Dixit later adopted the dog which died in 2000 at the age of twelve.

The dog shows up at the 1:33 mark.
