Auburn’s Canine Performance Sciences, part of the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been helping advance the breeding, development and training of detection dogs since the 1990s. Their breed of choice? Labrador Retrievers.
Their dogs have been deployed with the military, placed with Amtrak, the St. Louis Cardinals stadium, and MARTA in Atlanta (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority). AU’s Canine Performance Sciences has even produced eco-dogs to be paired with biologists and conservationists to detect tree root fungus and Burmese pythons. AU also works with AMK9, which owns the license to trademark Vapor Wake (Vapor Wake dogs are specifically trained to detect the odor in body worn explosives on a moving target).
