About a year ago, the photo seen here of Finland’s President, Sauli Niinistö, with his wife, Jenni Haukio,and their dog, “Lennu,” went viral. It’s not hard to see why, and others agreed. The photograph was re-shared on Twitter more than 50,000 times and “liked” almost 150,000 times after it was posted by a reporter. Lennu, a charming Boston Terrier, became a bona fide celebrity in his country.
When Lennu didn’t appear during the official Independence Day celebration last month, a major occasion in Finland when the president gives gifts to various national dignitaries, it was noticed. Lennu’s vet, however, was noticeably present at the ceremony, and Lennu’s fans worried.
Lennu, President Niinistö explained, had come down with “dog flu,” and the 7-year-old dog would be taking “an election vacation.”
