The Majorca Mastiff

We hate reporting that a breed with which most of us are unfamiliar is already in the grips of high volume puppy farms, at least in France, but we share this in the hopes that intrigued owner/breeders will come to embrace the breed, and eventually outnumber substandard breeders.

The Ca De Bou, also called the Majorca Mastiff or Perro de Presa Mallorquin, is a rare molloser that packs a lot of character in a medium sized dog. Belying its powerful, “tough-guy” exterior, the Ca De Bou has a wonderfully playful and fun personality, the primary reason the dog is growing in popularity.  He is quiet by nature, comfortable with people, and utterly devoted to his family. As a watch and guard dog, however, he is unparalleled, and when aroused (and not in a good way), his expression is “piercing.”

The Majorca Mastiff is not recognized by Canadian Kennel Club or AKC, and only the United Kennel Club in America started to register the breed in 2006 as the “Majorca Mastiff,” thus far its official breed name in English. We found only one site that seems to have attempted to create a Ca de Bou community.
