In the climate of postwar Italy in 1951, Achille Maramotti opened a menswear business under the label of “Max Mara.” He made clothing for women who couldn’t afford the high fashion look they really couldn’t afford. A half-century later, Max Mara is a billion-dollar empire known for classic clothes and luxurious materials. Maramotti died in 2005 (the year Forbes listed him as one of the world’s richest men), but Maramotti’s three children continue the legacy. With an anniversary approaching, Max Mara has chosen William Wegman to photograph his famous Weimaraners wearing Max Mara’s classic double-breasted camel coats.
