The Briard was immensely valuable to the French war efforts by carrying supplies transporting ammunition, and relaying messages to the front lines. The breed also proved to be invaluable as sentry dogs because it was reported that they had the most acute hearing of any dog breed. The medical corps used Briards to search for wounded soldiers, and it was reported that if a Briard passed any fallen man who was still breathing, that soldier was beyond assistance. For its tremendous contributions, the Briard was named the official dog of the French Army.
