On the Job Training

It’s said that an experienced Kangal is the shepherd’s most valuable asset, and as is so often the case with working dogs in many countries, novice Kangal Dogs learn their job from their elders. Youngsters keep the company of experienced Kangals not only to get “on the job training,” but also to learn where they stand in the hierarchy.  Often, the dogs work in pairs, or for large flocks, in teams. They “assume the position” around the sheep or goats, and from time to time, shift their spots. They tend to lie quietly still and watch during the day, and by night, actively patrol in a wide perimeter. Occasionally, they’ll let loose a “woof” to make their presence known.
