Context can be everything. The whole world knows and admires these dogs, but the creator of the breed you see at the left would know only that in his lifetime, the number of known breeds would increase by one.

Louis Doberman, tax collector and the “dog catcher of Apolda’ was familiar with most of the dog breeds of his time, but he still couldn’t find the one he wanted, let alone one that fit his vision for what was needed. Sometimes, we don’t always get what we want (strains of the Rolling Stones), but sometimes, we get what we need. Doberman ultimately got the dog he wanted by crafting it, himself, but it was five years after his death that the the breed he created was given his name.
