Pam and Gela met while working at a Los Angeles clothing boutique in 1988 and became good friends. At some point, they decided to start their own clothing line and each partner put in $100 to launch “Travis Jeans,” a line of maternity clothes. Good call. That $200 ultimately was parlayed into a company attractive enough for Liz Claiborne to buy for $56 million in 2003 with a $200 million earn-out. If you’ve never heard of “Travis Jeans,” you wouldn’t be alone. Most of us know their line by the name they changed to in 1996, Juicy Couture.
Their shift to Juicy Couture began with a perfect-fitting V-neck T-shirt. The shirt were obsessively cut, fit and dyed their original design until it was scooped up by department stores. The rest, as they say, is history.
We’ve not been able to uncover why Juicy Couture’s company signature logo consists of two West Highland White Terriers holding a shield bearing three hearts and Love G&P (for Gela and Pamela) – but we like it! A crown lies on top, and a Juicy Couture banner flutters above the slogan, “Made in the Glamorous USA.”
