Salukis don’t really have a “country of origin, they have a “region of origin.” The breed can be found from Iran and Iraq to Turkey, Egypt and across North Africa in the west. What’s really interesting is that breed structure is pretty consistent through these geographic regions, though there are variances in type having to do with how the breed is used in the area, what it hunts, and the local climate. One other thing we’ve read about the breed that is consistent across the board is its unique “spy-hop” move. When the dog can’t see its prey, it springs on all fours much the way a Gazelle does. Put another way, we hear “boing boing boing” when a Saluki makes this move.
