Unlike the majority of other terriers, the Miniature Schnauzer comes not from the British Isles, but Germany. Also unlike many of the terriers, Miniature Schnauzers weren’t bred specifically to go to ground (though they are good ratters), and their inclination to hunt vermin makes the breed successful in earthdog trials;
The breed’s name reflects its origins, Schnauze coming from the German word for muzzle, and apt description given the breed’s distinct facial hair and squarish muzzle. That facial hair isn’t just to saturate the pant legs of their owners after a drink of water, but rather to protect the dog’s face from vermin since the thick facial hair sometimes matted down into thick “armor.”
We know this is a pretty popular breed – so owners, show us your dogs!

Ah!! This goes a long way to explaining the trouble I have with a matted beard and a little bearded lady who hates being brushed!!!!
But look at that innocent “who, me?” face!! Worth every struggle (says the owner of a breed notorious for “controlled mats.”
