Stubborn Breed, or Just Too Smart?

Has your breed ever been called “stubborn,” when in fact, the right training method just hasn’t been applied when working with the dog?

Terriers are said to be notoriously difficult to train because of this “obstinance,” but sometimes (often, actually), it’s not just a matter of fooling the dog into believing that what you want from them is what they really want, too, but of staying a step ahead of a really smart dog who bores easily. Short sessions, creative approaches, and high value rewards go a long way to getting a terrier to oblige. It’s not impossible. Several terriers have earned assorted levels of the prestigious AKC Versatile Companion Dog title that honors dogs who’ve received titles in three of the AKC Companion Events: Obedience, Agility and Tracking.

Is the breed you love described as “stubborn,” too?
