If you read only one article on this topic all year, make it the one we're about to suggest. It's a quick, easy, and entertaining read, so it's a good one to take in if the word "legislation" typically makes your eyes glaze over as you stifle a yawn.
Read the article because it's important to "hear" what it says. Because we've been where the author has been, we know her content is spot on. National Purebred Dog Day isn't just an ideal, it has legislative roots going back to 2015 when the state of Colorado officially recognized it.
Shortly after the Colorado legislature passed NPDD, Georgia and Connecticut followed suit, and in 2017, U.S. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina introduced Senate Resolution 447 that would officially designate May 1st as National Purebred Dog Day (NPDD).
The day will come when the US Congress recognizes May 1 as the day to herald the contributions and heritage of the purebred dog. Until then, we urge you to do what we did: Pick up the phone or send a letter to your representative to weigh in on dog legislation in your state (or even ask that National Purebred Dog Day be recognized in your state. We'll help you, but it has to be you. Legislators pay the most attention to the people who can vote them in - or out - of office).

If you've come to realize how much trouble we're in from legislation that could change our way of life, join your state and local federations, coalitions, or alliances. You can find them by state here: www.akc.org/clubs-delegates/government-relations/federations/
In closing, the article we want you to read is "Responsible Breeder/Reluctant Responsible Citizen," from Showsight Magazine's February 14, 2019 issue. The link takes you to the digital copy on-line, and while there's a bit of a learning curve in navigating the site, you'll quickly figure out how to reach page 132.
