Following one’s owner from room to room is common to many of our breeds, and the trait has earned the English Shepherd the nickname, “The English Shadow.” Typically aloof with strangers, the breed can form intense bonds with his or her owners which often make the dog a “one-person dog.” Despite the name, the English Shepherd is American born and bred from descendants of shepherds’ dogs of England and southern Scotland. Colonists to the New World included herdsmen (also called “English Shepherds”) who were valued for their knowledge and hired them to manage flocks. They brought with them their sheepdogs and collies who were further selectively bred to work in their new home with an upright, loose-eyed herding style.
English Shepherds are not AKC recognized; farmers and stockmen registered their dogs instead in the National Stock Dog registry or Animal Research Foundation. The United Kennel Club accepted the breed in 1927.
