The Papier Scottie

This is nothing like the papier mache we did in junior high.

Scottish artist, Gosia Walton, takes the medium to epic level with her Scottie Dog sculptures.

Each Scottie starts with a papier mache frame, and has added to it over 7,000 individually rolled pieces of newspaper from papers such as The Scotsman and Guardian. Color is added by scraps from the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe program. They measure approximately 12 by 14 inches, and each dog has a unique character (also a unique name: Each of the dogs is named after a Scottish island such as Flotta and Yell). Their heads, ears and tails are turned in different poses, and paper strips that already provide a special texture also change slightly and serve to throw the dog in a different light (just like a real dog). Other than her Etsy site, we weren’t able to find a place to see more of her work, but we did come across an essay she wrote on her work.
