The Perfect Word

Collective nouns. We love them if only because some of them are head scratchers: An “unkindness” of ravens? A “parliament” of owls? A “cauldron” of bats?

We came across a juicy site brimming with collective nouns for dog breeds the author says are accepted by England’s Kennel Club. We need to verify this, but until we do, there is, to our knowledge, only one verified collective noun for a dog breed, and that is a Grumble of Pugs. In Holland, the Pug is called the mopshond – from the Dutch, “to grumble,” and most believe this the source for the collective noun.

We thought that was that until we came across another term which, while not technically a collective noun, is still another descriptive term, and our source is the parent club for the breed. We understand that when breeding Kromfohrländern, Kromis can be quite particular about their mates. Indeed, chosen mates don’t always take to each other and and require a ‘getting to know you’ period (its length to be determined only by the dogs, themselves). Little wonder, then, that when an actual pairing of Kromfohrlanders occurs, it’s typically called a “wedding” – so festive!
