The closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics happens today, and it seems fitting to mention Alex and Maia Shibutani, the ice dancing siblings who won the bronze medal. Despite a longing for a family dog, the pair recognized even as children that their dedication to the sport would have been unfair to a pet. Once they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, however, they knew they had found a training environment they loved and were unlikely to move again. The family decided to get a dog.
“Po” came first, a Maltese named after Jack Black’s character in Kung Fu Panda. Six months later, Maia Shibutani thought Po would enjoy another dog to play with, and “Lily,” Po’s niece, joined the family. Alex has said that knowing that unconditional love will greet them when they come home every day is awesome, while Maia adds that she’s not worried about the hypothetical of becoming Olympic stars and then forgetting her roots – Lily and Po keep them grounded. In an interview with Uproxx (from which the photo comes), Jason Nawara asked, ” When you medal are you going to take the medals and let Lily and Po wear them?,” and without hesitation, Maia answered, “Of course.”
