The popularity of certain breeds in the movies is not lost on us, so we delight when an uncommon breed shows up on the big screen: Because of Winn Dixie (a Berger Picard), Turner and Hootch (a Dogue de Bordeaux), Kate and Leopold (an Anatolian Shepherd), and Seven Psychopaths (a Shih Tzu), to name a few. Well, the Kuvasz isn’t a complete stranger to the world of movies, either. The lead role of “Hercules,” in the film, “The 101 Problems of Hercules” (an episode of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color that aired on October 16, 1966) was played by “Little Sister,” a Kuvasz and Canadian Champion, and in the movie, “Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco,” “Delilah” was played by a female Kuvasz. That last movie also included a Boxer, a Bullmastiff, a Bluetick Coonhound, a Podengo Portugueso Medio, and a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
Can you name any other films with an uncommon dog breed in it?
The 2003 movie “Good Boy” had a Border Terrier, Chinese Crested, Italian Greyhound, Briard, and Berner, as well as more popular Poodle, Boxer, and Great Dane. We were SO relieved when the Berner was portrayed in an unflattering way (excessive and constant flatulence) because we feared the “101 Dalmatians effect.” Alas, the Berners soared in popularity anyway.
