The Xoloitzcuintli was included in the American Kennel Club studbook in 1887 which made it one of the earliest breeds to be added, but it appeared as the “Mexican Hairless Dog.”
Sadly, the breed vanished from the AKC stud book nearly 60 years ago when interest in the once-popular dog faded, and the breed all but disappeared. It was a worthy celebration when the Xolo in all its sizes (three sizes, all of which can be born to a single litter) returned to AKC rings in 2011 despite an estimated population of fewer than 1,000 dogs in the United States at the time, and a worldwide population of roughly 30,000 Xolos.
That said the Xolo continues to garner interest as evidenced by the video below which to date has had over 1.5 million views in three months. Xolo owners, what say you? Does the video do your breed justice?
