This Post is Brought to You by the Letter “B”

We have a fondness for sharing breed standards that are unique in their wording, and so this post is brought to you by the letter, “B” for “bestial.”

We could lose ourselves in the folds of a Neapolitan Mastiff, an estate guard dog from Italy who among all breeds, just might be among the most deserving of a double take. The breed was developed intentionally to be an “alarmingly ugly dog” whose looks alone were enough to scare away intruders without the dog ever having to act. When forced, however, these dogs can absolutely spring into action with surprising speed, their massive muscular bodies able to knock down almost any bad guy. Bred for centuries to guard their family, Neapolitans are nevertheless devoted family dogs and loving towards children. That said, the breed standard may be unique in its inclusion of a certain “B” word:  “The essence of the Neapolitan is his bestial appearance, astounding head and imposing size and attitude.”
