Fans of Tom Petty were stunned in 2017 when the 66 year old American singer-songwriter died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, an extremely potent synthetic opioid 30 to 50 times more powerful than heroin.
Petty got relief where he could after he had slipped and fractured his hip during a rehearsal in preparation for a 40th anniversary with the Heartbreakers. He spent the entire 53-date tour struggling with severe pain, and sources say he should have stayed home and had a hip replacement surgery, but he pushed through saying, “I can’t do that to my band.”
Those who miss Petty’s unique voice look forward to October 16th when Wildflowers & All the Rest, a reissue of Petty’s 1994 album, Wildflowers, will be released. The reissue features the original 1994 album, along with unreleased songs, alternate versions, live tracks and home demos.
This month, a solo demo version of the classic title track premiered alongside a video featuring never before seen footage of Tom at his home, shot by Martyn Atkins during the recording of Wildflowers. The video shows Petty traipsing around his backyard with his beautiful 120 pound German Shepherd Dog, “Enzo.”

A German Shepherd Dog named “Dingo” was also owned by Howie Epstein, bass player for Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers. Indeed, Petty once said reflexively “Dingo” could come onstage “if he wants to.”
