The Walnut Picker: Not a Good Thing

Dog people can be so vivid in their descriptions. Case in point: When a dog’s breed standard calls for a medium breadth of muzzle, but she actually has an excessively narrow one, it’s referred to it as a “snipey” or “snippy” muzzle. A slang variation of this is a “walnut picker,” a dog with a muzzle so narrow that the dog could use it to pick the meat out of a walnut shell.

Ouch!

The Chow Chow is one breed that most decidedly should not have such a muzzle. From its AKC breed standard: “The muzzle is broad and well filled out under the eyes, its width and depth are equal and both dimensions should appear to be the same from its base to its tip.”
