It’s a little unfair of us to ask you to identify the breed of a puppy when it’s a breed most of us will never have seen as adult dogs. Still, putting up a picture of a puppy is a guaranteed “made you look” ploy that always works. Always.
This adorable puppy is a Hanoverian Scenthound, and as exotic as the name sounds to people unfamiliar with the breed, the Hanovererian is actually queued up to get AKC recognition once it gets out of the Foundation Stock Service, and through the Miscellaneous class. It might be a while since it was added to the FSS only a year ago.
Known as the Hannoverscher Schweißhund in its native Germany, the AKC has it listed as the Hanoverian Scenthound, while the United Kennel Club recognized the breed as the Hanoverian Hound in 1996.
By any name (including Liam Hound by which it was known in the early middle Ages), these dogs are specialists at tracking cloven hoofed game. Their intense focus and unwavering attention to difficult tracks make them eagerly sought by hunters who have done their research. The breed’s working style has been described as slow and steady, attributes carefully nurtured by caring breeders, and the registered breed club, Verein Hirschmann e.V., since 1894, which together have strictly regarded their breed’s working ability.
