Where the Frenchie Got its Name

Most of us can relate to losing a job, so we can feel for the lacemakers whose enemy wasn’t a better lacemaker, but a moment in time, the Industrial Revolution. Looking for better opportunities, they went to France and took their little Bulldogs along, and that’s where our story picks up. These Bulldogs grew on people in a big way, and it didn’t take long for the dogs to make their way to dog shows. It was one of those exhibitors who coined the breed’s name when at a benched show in England in 1893, he scrawled a sign that read, “French Bulldogs of British Descent,” and put it up over his dogs. The name caught on, and the rest is history.
