White and Orange Hound

We confess a weakness for breeds with descriptive names, and certainly the Chien Francais Blanc et Orange (or White and Orange Hound) fits the bill. Little known outside of France, the large and rustic scent hound is a desired breed among hunters who admire its strong mouth, stamina, perseverance, full cry and an excellent sense of smell.  The easy-going breed was developed specifically for hunting Roe Deer, boar, and fox in large packs.

Sources differ on the breeds in its ancestry. Some cite the French breeds, “Tricolores,” English Foxhound, and “Poitevins,”as its forefathers, while others believe it descended from crosses between the Billy and Foxhounds in the late 1800s.

The breed is recognized by the French Kennel Club, FCI, and in America, the United Kennel Club.
