Artist’s Thoughts: “I love Labrador Retrievers and have owned them for many years. We gave our daughter a Yellow Labrador Retriever as a wedding gift – she wanted one like the ones she had growing up – she specifically wanted a “clone” of our Abbey. I searched pedigrees and found a suitable one. Since she was starting what we hoped would be a wonderful marriage, the dog was named “Zuzu.” Her name came about because Frank Capra directed the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, the original dog we chose was mated with a dog owned by a member of Capra’s family. So, my daughter’s dog was named after Zuzu in the movie, she was the young daughter who gave Jimmy Stewart the petal’s from her flower and he stuck them in his pocket and near the end of the movie was thrilled he was there in reality with his family and this was confirmed when he reached in his pocket and said, “Zuzu’s petals!” My daughter subsequently got divorced, was devastated, but the love and companionship of her dog, as man or woman’s best friend, proved to be very true. I painted her dog for her as a Christmas gift because the dog is aging and I wanted her to be with my daughter forever, quietly watching her, waiting for the next walk, car ride, or treat. The dog is always keeping her eye on things at my daughter’s house and this is exactly how she looks as she is intently watching her master.”
