The first Boxer registered by the #AKC, and the first champion, was a dog imported from Germany by a former governor of New York.  The governor was Herbert H. Lehman, and the dog was Damf v Dom. Boxers were originally classified as members of the Non-Sporting group, but shifted over to the Working Group in 1936. Why the switch? Because Boxers had been in service with the armed forces and police forces of several nations as working dogs!
