The Brittany and the Epagneul Breton

Technically speaking, all Brittanys came from France where the breed was developed, but these days, there are two distinct breeds that differ in appearance and how they work. The “epagneul breton,” is France’s most popular dog, a breed we in the United States call the French Brittany. This dog tends to hunt closer and quarter tighter, while the American Brittany (or just Brittany) adapts more readily to a wider range with its longer legs and faster speed.

We always defer to breed experts, and our understanding is that another difference has to do with the black gene. The American Brittany disallows any expression of the black gene, while the French embrace it, with even the orange and white dogs showing a darker pigmented, often black, nose.  European dogs often have black in their coat, and often, the orange white is a richer red with the European blood which some refer to as chestnut and white.  The “American Brittany” tends to be a bit taller and heavier, and has a bit more angulation for a larger run, while the French brittany is a bit cobbier in build.  Both are wonderful hunters and fine companions.

When asking about what the meaning is of an “all age dog,” we were kindly given this explanation: The “All Age Stake” is open to all dogs of a specified breed or breeds without restriction as to the age of the dog, but which may be restricted by other conditions that are deemed necessary by the organizing club or society. So each club/society sets their rules: pointing breeds, breed only , retrievers or flushing, etc. Many thanks to “Kathy” for this help!
