Sometimes, the biggest problem with a breed is just finding one. Such is the case with the Hamiltonstövare, also known as the Hamilton. There are less than 20 known Hamiltons in America spread out mainly on both coasts, and National Purebred Dog Day has been fortunate that one of our supporters is a breeder/owner who has shared with us the progress of a litter born nearly two years ago.

Hamiltons are typical scent hounds in that they follow their nose, can be stubborn, and vocal (thought we like to call it “singing”). Despite their size (they have in their ancestry English Foxhounds, Harriers, and German hounds, but are lighter than Foxhounds), they don’t hunt deer because they refuse the scent, something that’s been bred into them over centuries.  They’ve also been described as a dog that’s its “own hound,” because while Hamiltons are outgoing and sociable,  they are when they feel like it.
