Sadly, this French Bulldog papier mache pull toy made in France around 1910 is no longer for sale by 1stdibs. When its chain was pulled, the dog’s head nodded and he growled, and given its value as a collectable antique, little wonder it sold for $3,200.  We share the toy because the dog’s coconut fiber ruff collar was rooted in historical fact.  In the 19th century, the breed virtually invaded Paris, particularly in working class districts where few coachmen or butchers didn’t own one. Frenchies were hugely popular with “fashion forward” upper crust French women, as well, and they were often adorned with elaborate collars made of feathers, fur, and even jewelry.  The breed found favor with another demographic: The notorious “Belles du Nuit” or Ladies of the Night, the first people to call these wonderful companions “Bouledogues Francais.”
