How can you not like a breed named, “Blue Lacy?” Despite its delicate name, this is not a delicate breed. But first things first.
The Blue Lacy is a Texas original by virtue of it being only one of two dog breeds to have originated in Texas (the other is the Silken Windhound). The dogs are named for brothers, George, Ewin, Frank and Harry Lacy who moved to Texas from Kentucky in 1858 and settled in the area of Burnet County. The boys needed a dog that could herd livestock, track, tree game, run trap lines, and hunt wild hogs (its specialty). The Lacy family said they developed the breed from a mixture of English Shepherd, Greyhound, (a bit of coyote), and (it’s rumored) wolf. The Texas House Concurrent Resolution No. 108 also mentioned scenthound.
For a hundred years, Blue Lacys were a common fixture on ranches in the Southwest where it was said that one such dog could do the work of five cowboys.
Though they are often called “blue” Lacys, there are three color varieties of the Lacy which means that “Blues” can be any shade of gray from light silver to dark charcoal, as well as “reds” which ranges from light cream to rust.
The Blue Lacy was recognized by the Texas senate in 2001 as “a true Texas breed,” and in 2005, was designated the “official state dog breed of Texas.” At the moment, the Blue Lacy is officially recognized by the National Kennel Club and the American Rare Breed Association. In 2009, the Lacy was accepted into the Canine Health and Development Registry which marks a first step towards full recognition with the United Kennel Club. Do we have any Blue Lacy owners on the page?

As a resident of Texas since 1970, I have seen a couple of Blue Lacys, but none that really resemble each other. They are an impressive breed, if in fact they can do all of the tasks listed.
However, it is not the only breed originating in Texas and finding world wide recognition. The Silken Windhound was developed in Austin TX in the mid-1980’s, and gained UKC recognition several years ago. It has spread to 23 different foreign countries and nearly every state in the union. Their annual gathering and show is called SilkenFest and routinely attracts well over 100 dogs to the 5 day festivities.
These hounds excel at show winning, lure coursing, straight racing, agility, obedience, rally and being the most impressive family pets, especially with children. Great information, Francie, and we’ve amended the post written five years ago to reflect your comment, so that you for that!
